What’s Driving Our Success in Surveys & Leadership?

28.02.2025

February saw no slow down in the demand for Storm’s expert services with clients old and new procuring a multitude of surveys for flood management projects across the UK.

Surveyor Josh Humphriss led a large-scale channel survey project for the River Yare catchment in the East of England. The survey was required  to inform future hydraulic modelling and also to assess how fluvial flood risk within the Yare catchment can be better managed now and adapted as the climate inevitably changes. The data provided by this survey has a dual benefit which will assist in managing flooding and maintaining water resources.

Improved management, and working closer with natural processes, can support sustainable growth of communities, the local economy and environment while striving for a Net Zero carbon outcome and identifying associated wider environmental opportunities. The survey included several distinct watercourses with combined extents of over 44km. Cross section spacing was set to around 200m. There was also a small area of Topographic survey picking up key levels in a road.

Using Trimble S5 total stations and Trimble R12 GNSS receivers. A integrated surveying technique was adopted to complete most of the cross sections. Due to the size of the project, a total of 10 E6 Grade control stations were installed across the site. Over 150 landowners were contacted by Josh and his team before the project began. Throughout the survey site work Storm deployed at least 3 survey teams, calling on survey coordinator – Paul Nicholls’ skill set again to logistically manage resources keeping the project to it’s critical path.

Amidst the operational buzz senior surveyors took time out to attend a Leadership and Management Training, programme. Providing the leadership team with practical techniques to enhance both personal and professional performance.

This 12-hour CPD-accredited programme equipped senior surveyors with essential leadership skills, enabling them to set and achieve clear goals, improve task prioritisation, and enhance their ability to delegate effectively. By refining these skills, our team can work more efficiently, ensuring that projects are delivered to exacting requirements of each individual survey project.

Effective communication is at the heart of successful teamwork, and this training has strengthened the surveyors’ ability to communicate with clarity and confidence. Whether liaising with clients, collaborating with colleagues, or leading teams in the field, these enhanced communication skills will contribute to stronger working relationships with Storm’s clients, each of which have different requirements.

A key focus of the training was performance and conflict management, equipping our surveyors with strategies to handle challenges constructively. By fostering a positive and solution-focused approach, we can maintain a productive and harmonious working environment, ensuring that issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.

Above all, this training has reinforced the importance of motivation and inspiration—both personally and within the team. By cultivating a workplace culture that encourages enthusiasm and commitment, Storm continue to deliver hyper-intelligent data surveys and uphold Storm Geomatics’ reputation as the UK’s leader of inland water-based surveys.

Technical Director, Anthony Pritchard comment “This investment in our senior surveyor leadership is a testament to our ongoing dedication to professional growth, ensuring our surveyors are not only skilled in technical surveying but also equipped to lead, manage, and inspire.”

With all hands to the pump Managing Director Mike Hopkins, mobilised on an urgent project on a collapsed embankment that required survey data to assist in the remedial works. Mike thoroughly enjoyed this rare opportunity to be involved in this project’s lifecycle and offer his 30 years of survey knowledge to provide exceptional deliverables that gave engineers detailed information to create a long term solution.
